Mr. Austin's parked his Ferrari in front of Fracine's and got out. His dark hair was graying, and his tan skin was beginning to wrinkle in some places, but, for the most part, he still looked young. His brown eyes had a fire in them that many people did not possess, one that many people feared. He ran a hand through his hair and looked I've the restaurant with disgust. He was only here to check out a possible candidate for his son's new assistant. One of his friends had tipped him off that one of the waiters here was diverse enough for the new campaign.
He walked inside the restaurant, pushing his sunglasses on the top of his head. He looked around the place distastefully. Noticing a sign that said "Please wait to be seated", he waited for a waiter to notice him. The friend who'd told him had also said he would probably be able to tell who they were talking about as soon as the boy talked.

Logan sat at his desk, reading over email after email. He needed an assistant to do this for him. He still had a meeting to go to and a phone conference with a group in Japan. He hasn't slept in twenty four hours, and he'd probably be up for another day before he would have any chance to sleep at all. He hadn't eaten all day.
He knew he needed an assistant, but he wanted to do it his way. Technically his dad was the rightful owner of the company, and he made all the final decisions. He just thought his dad was being stupid about this whole thing. Logan wanted to hire someone with experience. He wanted someone who knew what they were doing.

Mak was watching Devon, one of the cooks, make a grilled cheese. He did it discreetly. He wasn't a very social person, and was terrified of Devon noticing him. Devon had short brown hair and bright green eyes. He had the cutest freckles and towered over Mak at six foot two. The door's bell rang and Mak turned around to see Mr. Austins. He walked over to him with a very slight smile and asked, voice almost a whisper, "How many?" though the answer was obvious. It was required of staff to ask it, even if the number of the party seemed clear. Mak's eyes wandered from Mr. Austins' face as he looked at every aspect of him. He almost leaned over to look at the other sides of him, but kept himself from doing so. He didn't want to creep out a customer.

Mr. Austins looked up, his eyes scanning Mak critically. He was almost immediately reassured that this was the kid his friend had told him about. He let his eyes fall back to Mak's, a kind smile on his thin lips.
"Just me, thanks," he said in his powerful voice. It was a voice that made heads turn, but the fire behind it didn't burn so strong anymore. He was getting older, losing his touch slowly as time slipped by him. When he was younger, all heads turned at the sound of his persuasive voice. Today it just held the attention of the person he was speaking to. He'd passed his fire, among other things, to his son. Logan knew how to use it perhaps better than his father.

Mak nodded and picked up a menu. "Right this way, sir," voice quieter now. He was very intimidated by Mr. Austins and his voice and eyes. Everything about him was somewhat scary to the small, skinny, weak Mak. Knowing the preference of customers, he seated Mr. Austins at a booth next to a window and put the menu in front of him. Mak quickly, instinctively straightened up everything on the table - the silverware, spare plate, box of condiments, vase of daisies, and the daisies themselves. "Today's special is the spinach, ham, and cheese omelette," he said, but his voice came out as a small squeak. Mak reached into his apron and pulled out a pad and pencil. "What would..." He decided it would be easier to understand if he wrote instead of talked. In his best handwriting, Mak asked what Mr. Austins would like to drink. He tore it out and left it on the table. He doodled goldfish on the edges of his notepad.

Mr. Austins raised his eyebrows, fairly surprised by the fact that the waiter had written it down. He glanced at the menu, no surprised that it lacked anything that he would normally drink. He had to remind himself that this wasn't one of his classy restaurants. After a few moments of debate, he came to a decision. "Just a water with lemon, please." His eyes scanned the menu, looking for some sort of food that would at least slightly please him. After a while, he gave up. Sighing, he added, "And I'll just have the special, thank you." He handed Mak the menu back. He silently argued with himself, wondering if he should bring up his offer now. His more logical side said that it would only intimidate Mak. His impatient side said it would just be better that way. In the end, though, his logical side won. He decided to wait until after he had eaten. Then he would make Mak sit down for a few minutes and he would lay his offer out on the table.

Mak nodded and wrote it down. He tore that out, held it with his teeth, and wrote a note to Mr. Austins that said, 'Coming right up.' Mak laid that in front of him. When he accidentally touched the man's hand, he jumped and blushed heavily. Thoroughly embarrassed, Mak turned and walked into the kitchen. He handed the order to Devon, jumping again when he touched his hand. What is wrong with you? No one thinks anything when you brush their hand. Calm down, for Christ's sake. Mak sighed and made Mr. Austins' water with lemon. He wanted to add two lemon slices, but he worried about whether that would be too much. Mak decided to just put one slice on the glass's rim and brought that, along with a coaster, to Mr. Austin's table. He laid it down in front of him, careful not to touch his finger or hand or arm. Mak nearly jumped anyways. As soon as he had straightened up everything on the table again, he went into the bathroom to calm down.

Sorry, bad service. That's why it's kinda small too.

Mr. Austins took the water gratefully. He took a drink, the cool water sliding down his throat and soothing his parched mouth. He wiped his hand off on the napkin. The condensation beaded on the glass. Where his hand had been, the cup was relatively dry. He pulled out his phone and dialed Logan's number. He liked to occasionally check in on his son, make sure he was working. He liked to point out his son's flaw, always pushing him to work as hard as he could. Hard work brought happiness.

Mak heard the bell ding and came out of the bathroom, face a bit wet with the water he had splashed on himself. "Order up!" Devon announced, placing the omelette on a plate and decorating it with parsley. Mak smiled at him and lingered at the window, staring after Devon. Devon gave him a weird look and went back to cleaning the kitchen. Mak snapped out of his daze and, blushing, carried the order to Mr. Austins. He laid it in front of him and straightened the table for the third time. He then went around the diner straightening all the table stuffs. Mak went up to the front, straightened the sign, then went to the podium and straightened the menus and cup of writing utensils and stack of notepads. He sat down at one of the window seats and stared through the glass.

Mr. Austins happily took the omelette. He ate it in a distasteful manner. Usually his omelette a were made with egg whites only. He really was only here to see Mak. As soon as he finished, he raised up his hand and delicately waved the boy over.
He went over his speech in his mind multiple times. Normally he would be able to wing it, but he suspected this may be a touchy subject for the young kid. He didn't want to anger Mak, just get his son an assistant and start the diversity push in his company. Two birds with one stone.
Plus, he'd be doing Mak a favor. The assistant position was simple. They just had to get Logan coffee, make sure he ate all his meals, sort through emails and paper mail, and keep him on schedule. It was all simple things and it offered extremely good pay. No person in their right mind would be able to resist the check they received every other week for just doing such straightforward tasks.
Sure, Logan could be insufferable, but he was easy enough to tolerate while he was working. He hardly paid anyone any mind.

Mak looked over at Mr. Austins and sprang to his feet, dashing over to customer. Managing a voice, he asked, "Yes, sir? How may I help you?" Mak brushed his hair out of his eyes and tucked it behind his ear. He noticed Mr. Austins' empty dishes and picked up his plate. "Would you like more water... sir?" he squeaked. You're an idiot. Mak began to blush, more nervous than he had ever been serving a customer. His hands began to shake and he nearly dropped the plate. With his free hand, Mak brushed stray hair out of his face.

"Sit down, kid," Mr. Austins said in a voice that left no room for argument. It wasn't rude, more strict. One could compare it to a parent ordering their kid to do something. He obviously wasn't going to hurt Mak as his face was highlighted with a kind smile.
He recited the speech once more in his mind before continuing. He said, "My friend's daughter works here. Her name is Melody, you might know know her, but that's beside the point. You can't make good money here. It's in the old part of town, so I'm sure a lot of people pass it up. A kid like you must need money to pay for your bills and your life and, if you chose to go that way, your schooling. You must be tight on money, and I happen to know that isn't a life that anyone enjoys. So I have an offer for you. Melody's mom told me about you. My company, JATech which I'm sure you've heard of considering we probably made your phone, is on a diversity push. You'd be a fantastic candidate for our diversity campaign. The CEO of the company, my son, needs an assistant. The job is simple, and it pays at least three times your wages here. Your hours are fairly flexible as we're hiring him two assistants."

Mak uneasily sat down, putting the plate down as well. He was nervous that he had done something wrong, or Mr. Austins was unsatisfied with his performance. Then he started talking about money and such. "My company, JATech, which I'm sure you've heard of considering we probably made your phone..." Mak chuckled to himself. I don't have a phone. No cellphone, no landline, no computer, and no television. When he heard 'diversity push' and 'diversity campaign', something stirred in his chest. Mak narrowed his eyes, cleared his throat, and spoke fully. His voice was surprisingly high. "You want to hire me because you think I'm different?" he asked, finding this offensive. His black sclera contacts were highly reflective, and when he tilted his head the right way, it was like looking into the sun. Mak did it purposefully to put off Mr. Austins.

Mr. Austins held up his hands slightly, in a gesture that said he meant no harm. He looked away just slightly, not wanting to blind himself. He wasn't one to back down. Ever.
"I don't mean it in a bad way, kid. We're hiring people from all age ranges, all races. Everything. We were never a company to discriminate, but it's apparently bad to have the majority of your employees the same age and the same race. Different is good, and I intend to prove that my company accepts people no matter their age, race, or any other characteristic that society finds as defining.
"Of course, you don't have to choose to take the position. We would just greatly appreciate if you would. My son is in a bind and we can't find many people willing to be an assistant." Mr. Austins didn't really care if his son was emaciated as long as he was making money, but no one could ever tell that when he continued, "I'm worried. His health is deteriorating. He refuses to take vacation. He does far too much work. He doesn't sleep enough and he skips meals so he can finish up his work. My son is going to have a heart attack at the age of twenty five with how hard he's working.."

Mak blinked. You're hiring someone 'different' to make your company look good, to prove a point? I hope you can hear yourself talking. He sighed and looked up at the ceiling as his fingers began to play with each other. It was a nervous habit of his. Mak looked back at Mr. Austins and nodded slightly. "Okay. I'll work for you," he replied, voice dropping to a whisper again. He stood and picked up his plate. "More water?"

Mr. Austins waited on the ground floor, in the lobby, for Mak. It wasn't uncommon for him to spend hours in the front lobby, greeting people as they came and went. He liked to meet the employees at his corporate offices. He never understood how Logan could have everyone's name memorized, though he never talked to anyone except when necessary.

Logan was up in his office, powering through his third coffee of the morning. His ashtray was full of cigarette butts, his trash bin full. The janitor hadn't been able to get in and clean because he'd been in the office for three day's straight. He had slept five hours in that time span, and it was finally starting to show through into his features. His black eyes, usually filled with a fire, were dead. There were dark circles highlighting them. His strong shoulders sagged under the stress and sleep deprivation.

Mak anxiously walked through the doors, legs sore. He walked most places, but rode his bike if they were especially far. He spotted Mr. Austins and dashed over. He intended to ask, "How are you, Mr. Austins?" but it came out as a series of muffled squeaks and huffs. Mak blushed and his shoulders drooped. You've already made a fool of yourself. I can't believe you. He looked around. "Wh-wh-where is L-Logan's offi-off-office?"

"We have to go up to the forty-second floor. I hope you like elevators because that would be a he** of a climb to make every day," Mr. Austins said, hitting the up button on the elevator.
The chic chrome doors slid open, revealing a fairly large square of space. A few people stepped out, nodding their heads at the pair. Mr. Austins walked into the elevator and searched for the button he was looking for. He wasted no time in pushing it. The doors slid closed behind Mak and they started their long ascent up the building.

Mak nodded and followed Mr. Austins inside. He began to sweat, very nervous about his first day on the job. He didn't want to embarrass himself (at least more than he already had) or do something wrong or spill Logan's coffee or mess up his files or- oh. Mak was incredibly anxious about this. He couldn't tell if it was the excited kind of anxious or the nervous-scared-to-death anxious or the kind of anxious where both are all jumbled up. The elevator reached the 42nd floor and Mak let Mr. Austins out first. He quickly hopped out, not wanting to be left in the elevator or be squished in the doors. "You lead the way sir," he whispered.

Mr. Austins walked along the side of a glass wall. It exposed Logan's large office, all cluttered and disorganized. He was sitting at his seat, his eyes focused on the screen of his computer, scanning over lines of an email. He took a drink from the bottle of Jack Daniels that sat next to his hand. Getting buzzed helped him stay on his toes. Mr. Austins rapped his knuckles on the door and opened it without waiting for a response. Logan looked up, his tired eyes scanning over the visitors. He pushed back from his desk and stood up.
"Hey Jack," Logan addressed his father in a stiff voice. "What can I do for you?"
His dad chuckled and said, "Logan, this is your new assistant, Mak. Mak, this is your new boss, Logan."

Mak's knees grew incredibly weak and he almost collapsed. Not only was Logan incredibly cute, he was also incredibly intimidating. Bosses usually are, but Logan was very similar to his father, and Mr. Austins Sr. was completely terrifying. Mak reached out a trembling hand. "H-how do you d-do, s-sir-s-sir?" he stammered. Mak spotted a spider on the corner of Logan's desk and squealed, jumping away and hiding being Mr. Austins Sr. "There's a spider," he whispered.

Logan let out a low chuckle at Mak's squeal. He turned on his heels and laid his hand at the edge of the desk. With a paper, he coaxed it onto his palm. Ever so carefully, he cupped his other hand over the top of the arachnid, trapping it in his hands. he walked out of the room, returning a few minutes later.
"Better?" he asked, one eyebrow arched. He had a sly smile ghosting his lips lightly.

Mak nodded, slowly sliding out from behind Mr. Austins Sr. "Y-yeah..." He looked around, placing his head behind his back and fiddling with his fingers. He found a pen and a blank piece of paper and wrote, 'As your new assistant, what shall I do first, Mr. Austins?' and handed it to Logan.

Logan eyed his father, the look telling him that he needed to leave or he would be forced to leave. Mr. Austin's took note and said, "Be good Mak, you too Logan.." He then turned on his heels and evacuated the office, his long strides measured as he walked down the hallway.
"First off, I need to get some things straight. You probably won't like me much. Honestly, I'm rude, impatient, and I expect a lot from people. In other words, I'm a major jerk. Despite that, you rely on me. If I like you, you get raises. That being said, I rely on you. Without you, my life is a living hel*. I don't sleep, I don't eat. You need to be here when you have work. I excuse very few things as good reason to miss your job. Do what I ask of you, and I will respect you. You got that?" his voice wasn't rude, just very factual.

Mak blinked and shrunk, shying away from him. He was certainly much more frightening than his father. Mak tried to say, 'Yes, sir,' but couldn't make any noise. He made a simple nod and chewed on his lip nervously. "Can I get some water, s-sir?" he squeaked. It sounded more like, "Ah eh uh aer, ssss?" Mak began to blush heavily. You dumb*ss!
